Spectrum app not working – how to fix it

The Spectrum app is a really cool feature that Spectrum cable offers, allowing you to take your TV channels with you wherever you go.

Recently, I had been using the Spectrum app exclusively to watch live TV, but that experience took a hit after the app started having issues. The app would slow down for no random reason and the stream would start buffering even though my internet was fine.

Sometimes the app crashed and I had to launch it again to continue watching.

To find out how I could troubleshoot my Spectrum app, I went online to do as much research as possible.

After several hours of in-depth research, I figured out what the problem was and fixed it within minutes.

I hope that after reading this article, which I did with the help of that research, you can also fix your Spectrum app that is not working.

If the Spectrum app doesn’t work on your device, make sure your device meets the minimum system requirements and your device’s location services are enabled.

Read on to find out why you may need to reset your router if the methods I’ve discussed above don’t work.

Make sure your device meets the minimum requirements

Before you start using the Spectrum app, Spectrum recommends that your devices and Internet connection meet a number of requirements to allow the app to function properly.

Your internet speed must be at least 10 Mbps, which would be covered by all Spectrum plans, so you can ignore this requirement if you have internet from them.

When it comes to your device, it should be:

  • An Apple device running iOS 12 or higher.
  • An Android device running version 5.0 or higher.
  • A second-generation Kindle Fire or Fire HDX. or after.
  • A 3rd generation. Roku or newer.
  • An Xbox One or an Xbox Series X|S.
  • A Samsung Smart TV from 2012 or later.
  • A 4th generation. Apple TV or Apple TV 4K.

Please note that you cannot use the app on a jailbroken iOS device, and your Spectrum account must be in good standing to use the service.

Make sure your devices and Spectrum account meet these requirements if you can’t get the Spectrum app to work on your device.

Location service activated

Spectrum offers channels in the app depending on where you are, and some channels may be disabled if you are in a location where it is not available.

This may be the case if you try to use the app while away from home and some channels may not be available in your current area.

You’ll also need to enable location services on your device so Spectrum knows where you are and delivers all available channels to your area.

To turn on location services on iOS:

  • Launch the Settings app.
  • Go to Privacy > Location Services.
  • Turn on location services.
  • Scroll down and find the Spectrum app.

Set location access to While using the app so that the app can see where you are and prevent it from tracking your location all the time.

For Android:

  • Swipe down from the top of your screen.
  • Long press the Location icon.
  • Select App location permissions.
  • Find the Spectrum app and select it.
  • Set it to Allowed only while in use.
  • Launch the Spectrum app again and see if it starts working like it’s supposed to.

Turn off parental controls

If you have parental controls turned on, you will not be able to view all the content available in the Spectrum app.

Turn it off or lower the level of parental controls so you can start watching the content you want.

You can modify the parental control settings by going to the app settings and checking in the parental control section.

Reboot your router

Spectrum says that problems with the app can also be caused by your internet connection being interrupted or having issues.

Rebooting the router can help with the problem as it resets the router and may end up fixing your internet.

To do this:

  • Power off the router.
  • Unplug the router from its power outlet.
  • Wait at least 45 seconds before plugging it back in.
  • Power on the router.

Launch the app again after reconnecting to the internet and see if it resolved the issue.

Reboot your device

Rebooting your device can also help with issues with the Spectrum app similar to how it can with your router.

It won’t take much of your time and you can do it in seconds.

Rebooting your device is easy, just turn it off and then wait a minute.

After that, turn on the device again and check the app again to see if it fixed the problem with the app.

Reboot your router

If restarting your devices and your router doesn’t fix the problem with the app, you may need to reset your router to factory defaults as a last resort.

Remember that doing so will remove the custom name and password you set for your Wi-Fi and remove all devices connected to it.

To reset your Spectrum router to factory defaults:

  • Sign in to your Spectrum account.
  • Select the Services tab.
  • Go to Internet > Services and Equipment.
  • Select Are you having problems?.
  • Then select Reset computer.

When the reset is complete, launch the Spectrum app again to see if the reset fixed the problem.
